Common Stinging Insects in Canada:
- Bees: Vital for pollination, especially honeybees, which are crucial for agriculture and ecosystems.
- Yellow Jackets: A wasp species responsible for about 70% of human stings in North America, often mistaken for bees.
- Hornets: The European hornet is the only established species in Canada, larger and more aggressive than typical wasps.
- Paper Wasps: Build umbrella-shaped nests and are generally less aggressive but will defend them if threatened.
- Mud Daubers: Solitary wasps that build mud nests, generally not aggressive and primarily feed on spiders for their larvae.
Health and Safety Considerations:
- Sting Risks: While most stings result in temporary pain and swelling, some individuals may experience severe allergic reactions. Systemic allergic reactions occur in about 0.4% to 0.8% of children and 3% of adults.
- Fatalities: Between 2000 and 2009, there were 35 reported deaths in Canada due to stings from hornets, wasps, and bees.
Stinging Pests Treatment and Removal Options
- Aerosol Treatments: Our professionals apply specialized aerosol or foam treatments directly to exposed wasp and hornet nests, effectively targeting the queen and disrupting the entire colony.
- Dust Treatments: For nests located in voids or underground, we use a residual dust treatment at the entrance. As the insects move in and out, they spread the dust throughout the nest, ensuring thorough elimination.
- Nest Removal: After the queen is removed, the colony will begin to collapse. In some cases, our team may choose to remove the nest to expedite this process. We carefully enclose the nest in netting or plastic bags and typically perform the removal in the early morning or late afternoon when most insects are inside.
Important Note:
For certain species of wasps and hornets, an inactive nest can deter future nesting in the area. In these situations, leaving the nest intact after the population has been eliminated may be advantageous.
