Health Risks Associated with Cockroaches:

• Allergies and Asthma: Cockroach droppings, saliva, and body parts can trigger allergies and asthma attacks, especially in children.
• Disease Transmission: While not direct vectors, cockroaches can carry bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli on their bodies, contaminating food and surfaces.

Common Types of Cockroaches in Canada:

• American Cockroach: 28 to 43 mm long, reddish brown to mahogany with a yellow band around the head; can fly, usually found outdoors in warm, damp areas like flowerbeds and indoors in basements, bathrooms, and kitchens.
• Brown-Banded Cockroach: 10 to 14 mm long, light brown with tan bands across the wings; mainly nocturnal but may forage during the day, preferring warm, dry spaces like cabinets and picture frames while avoiding water sources.
• German Cockroach: 13 to 16 mm long, light brown to tan; active at night, they search for food and water, thriving in heated structures with easy access to resources.
• Oriental Cockroach: 25 to 32 mm long, shiny black to dark reddish; primarily outdoor dwellers that invade homes through gaps in doorways, preferring cool, damp conditions and commonly found on porches, in wall voids, sewers, and drains.
• Wood Cockroach: Typically, outdoors, about 25 mm long, and capable of flight. They are not common pests indoors but may enter during warmer months.
